Social Media and China

As most of you are aware, the plan is to one day have our own little shop where The Scrub Me Down Kitchen never has to close! That’s the dream. Will it happen? Here’s hoping!

Since the future is uncertain, who knows if this little shop will be in China, or in another country. And that means…. a history. On social media.

Do you have any idea how far the world has come in terms of technology since I arrived in China in 2002? Crap, dial up was still considered to be the most amazing thing. I remember a telephone call with the guy from Best Buy in 2005 and I was trying to find an external storage device for my computer, and he assured me I would never never be able to fill up a 1GB hard drive. Laugh with me! I just finished downloading 2.1GB of stuff last night.

And then! The last time I actually really used YouTube, it was legal in China. Same with Facebook. Twitter was never in China. The Great Firewall of China just doesn’t seem to like western social media platforms.

VPN.jpgTo get on any sort of western site, one needs something called a VPN to access it. It allows us to see the internet the same way you do. And honestly? It is a little bit troublesome to get on things like Facebook or Instagram or WordPress when you can’t just click on it, you have to make sure your VPN is working, check to make sure the signal is strong, if not change it…

When I first set up my Facebook account, it was so easy! Now looking at it, it is crazy! There are ads everywhere, something about nothing is trending now, random games popping up, Facebook is always trying to get me to add more friends (I am quite happy with the few I have thank you very much), and their ads while I am trying to look at soap porn (honest to goodness, some people are so talented with their swirling). It’s just such a busy page! And then there is Twitter. Compress your thought into 140 characters or less. And then Instagram, which I think is better than Twitter actually.

I’ve been trying to figure out how to upload to YouTube, we’ve lots of videos we’ve taken of making things! But go figure. They are all upside down, sideways and trying to figure out how to flip them. But for that you need a film editor software and then have to learn how to use that and then then then… trying to figure out the iMovie app and other editors are doing my head in. I spent over an hour trying to figure out how to cut a movie to make part in super quite lightning mode, and the rest in normal. Still haven’t figured it out. But at least I know how to add a movie!

Social Media is not easy. The plan was to only have, “word of mouth” advertising for a while here in China. But it turns out, word of mouth advertising is no longer what it once was. Social media has become the word of mouth. So we either learn it, use it and learn to get the techie stuff out of the way fast so we can get on with making stuff, or we fall behind.

Come to think of it, I guess if you never stopped using social media like we did, there would be no problem. So this entire post makes no sense to anyone but us!

Newsletter, The Scrub Me Down Kitchen

Newsletter: May 2017

May is officially here, and that means its Spring time in all of China! Wonderful coolish nights and nice warm days. Great for being outside and BBQ’s are opening up all over the place.

A few days ago we had a buy one get one half price on body butters and buy one body scrub and get a body body half price. Just so you know, that sale is still on as there are a couple of body butters and body scrubs left. This sale will continue until all the body butters are gone! We need to free up space for our new scents that just arrived from abroad; Passion Fruit, Green Tea, Tangerine and a few more!

The other day, a blog post was posted about a Cinqo de Mayo sale that is going to begin tomorrow (May 4) and only last one day. I think its a pretty sweet deal! You should definitely check it out. (its kind of hit and miss with and without the VPN). The sale is on the Margarita line. Check out the video!

We’ll be having a few more fun sales over the next few months to celebrate; Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Children’s Day, Barb’s birthday both day and month! And sprinkled through out there, some fun fast sales that might only last ten minutes!

Some new things:

The Scrub Me Down- Happy Skin blog is slowly coming together. The Instagram thingie is slowly growing as we figure out how to make it work. The blog is a place for us to talk about ingredients, new products, some epic fails (and when you’ve made as much as I have, there are quite a few!), resources for those of you who feel tempted to begin some DIY’ing too. We will also have some specials only available on the blog, Instagram or Facebook. So tune in and enjoy! We are trying to figure out iMovies so we can share some of the videos we’ve been making while making all the lovely products you like.

We are going to be playing around with the Bee Happy Face Toner and trying to develop a new more moisturising toner for those with oily or very dry skin. For oily skin, the hope is that it can replace a lotion/cream (or use a much lighter product) and for dry skin, it can pack a punch in the oomph department. We’ve formulated the recipe, now just need to make it a reality.

The much anticipated kick-in-the-seat-of-your-pants-as-yet-unnamed-product for hydration passed all our initial testing and our testers really enjoyed them too and liked the way this product made their skin feel like smooth and pleasantly plump! So this month we will have a new face product to give you some added moisture! And, if you massage it around the eyes? It can possibly help to reduce that puffy look because it packs a huge punch in the hydration department. It’s still unnamed at this point and we’ve just been referring to it by its ingredient name.

The Eye Serum. I’ve figured out how to thicken it up a little without altering the recipe too much, now just need to find a very specific type of pump bottle on Taobao or else it is back to the drawing board to try to figure it out again.

Soaps. Many of the beautiful soaps that you’ve seen over the past couple of months are ready to find new homes! We are also working hard to make some new fun soaps to make bath time so much more fun and enjoyable!

Foaming Handwash. Well this foaming hand wash we’ve got the base down, but we ain’t getting any foam! It is a lovely product, it doesn’t dry, but to use it, you have to actually wash your hands with some friction action to get your hands clean. Adult only handwash anyone? So it is back to the drawing board for the handwash to try to get some foaming action on because if there ain’t no foam, most people won’t beleive it actually works. We’ve had two successful test runs for some foaming action face wash, just need one more to go before we ask for testers and begin offering it. This is one thing that is doing my head in! We really wanted to have it ready for Mother’s Day, but it doesn’t seem likey. Perhaps by Father’s Day!
